Two goals by
Alec Nagel in a four-minute span late in the match lifted Drury to a 3-1 victory over Missouri-St. Louis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup of league contenders Sunday afternoon at Harrison Stadium in the Curry Sports Complex.
The Panthers improved to 8-2 overall and 6-2 in the GLVC, while UMSL fell to 7-2-1 and 6-2.
Drury struck first on
Jack Mathis' fourth goal of the season, off a penalty kick, at the 38:57 mark to put the Panthers up 1-0. It stayed that way until the Tritons countered with D.J. Bednar's header from close range at 78:41 after the Panthers'
Matt Clarkin had been sent off following two yellow cards.Â
But even a man down, Drury answered emphatically just two minutes and 14 seconds later with Nagel's eighth goal of the season, from 12 yards out off a
Charles Guelly assist, and then the same combination hooked up at 84:01 for the clincher, Nagel's ninth of the year, when he rounded the keeper and shot into the open net from six yards out.
"It was a great result for us," Drury coach
Ryan Swan said. "This was an important game and the guys responded with a good performance. UMSL is very difficult to play against, but we were patient and created a lot of chances in the second half. Our response to the equalizing goal and red card was fantastic."
The Panthers outshot the Tritons 15-6, including 4-2 on goal. Drury was called for 19 fouls to seven on UMSL, and the Panthers held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Drury returns to the GLVC road next weekend for matches at Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky., on Friday and McKendree in Lebanon, Ill., on Sunday.
