Soccer Panthers Ready To Tackle Tiffin In NCAA-II Tourney Opener Friday

Drury Soccer will tackle a fresh, new face for its post-season opener when the fourth-seeded Panthers take on fifth-seed Tiffin in an NCAA-II tournament first-round matchup on Friday in Quincy, Ill.

Coach Ryan Swan's Panthers (15-4-0) will tackle Tiffin's Dragons (12-4-1) in a 7 p.m. start at what is expected to be a chilly Legends Stadium in Quincy, where the top-seeded Hawks (18-1-2) await Friday's winner for Sunday's Round of 32 matchup starting at 1 p.m.

Drury is in the NCAA tourney field for the third in the program's history, with all three trips coming in Swan's six season's at the helm. The Panthers reached the Sweet 16 in Swan's first year (2009) and lost in the first round in 2012.

Tiffin was the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season champion for a second straight year, finishing 11-3 in league play, but lost 2-1 to Saginaw Valley State in the conference post-season tourney semifinals. Among its results was a 1-1 tie at GLVC member Indianapolis on September 7.

Andre Landell, a 5-10 sophomore forward, was the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year and led the league in numerous categories, including goals (14), assists (7) and points (35).

Samuel Oki, a 6-1 junior defender, was the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year and helped pace a defense that allowed just 12 goals all season. Tiffin also featured the GLIAC Freshman of the Year in midfielder Daniel Fallon (two goals, three assists) and the Keeper of the Year with 6-4, 200-pound senior Jeremy Ashley (12 wins, eight shutouts).

The Dragons are coached by Rudy Brownell, who's 87-43-14 in eight seasons as the head coach.

Tiffin has outscored its opponents 41-14 on the season and attempted an average of 17.6 shots per game while allowing foes just 11.1 shots. The Dragons have a 20-2 scoring advantage on their foes in the first half this season.

Swan's Panthers have outscored their foes 40-12, averaging 15.3 shots per game while allowing just 8.4.

Alec Nagel leads DU with 10 goals and 21 points, while Nick Ammann has nine goals and Jack Mathis eight goals and four assists.

Logan Ponche has posted nine shutouts and 39 saves in goal.
