QUINCY, Ill. -
Charles Guelly's goal just over a minute into the second overtime lifted fourth-seed Drury to a 1-0 victory over fifth-seed Tiffin in an NCAA-II first-round tournament game here on a frigid Friday night at Legends Stadium.
Guelly's heroics, off a
Nick Ammann assist, pushed the Panthers to 16-4-0 overall and into Sunday's second round against top seed Quincy (18-1-2) on its own field. Coach
Ryan Swan's Panthers lost to the Hawks 3-2 here on September 28.
Guelly's goal from about 10 yards off officially at 1:01.04 broke open a classic duel between the Panthers and the Dragons (12-5-1), the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season champions. It was a frustrating first 100 minutes particularly for Drury, which saw oppportunity after opportunity go by the wayside until the Ammann/Guelly combo broke through on a night when temperatures were in the mid-20s throughout the contest.
Drury held only an 11-8 advantage in shots, but the Panthers had an 8-4 lead in shots on goal, including several from close range that couldn't find the back of the net. Jeremy Ashley had six saves for Tiffin, while
Logan Ponche picked up four saves in the shutout victory.
"It was a great result today," said Swan, who led the Panthers to their first NCAA tourney win since 2009. "The guys played really well and created a lot of good chances. I thought the Tiffin keeper had some really good saves. I was very proud of the maturity that the team showed in not getting frustrated.
"Charles is a very talented player and showed great composure on the game-winning goal."
Drury had six corner kicks to none by the Dragons, who lost in the first round of the NCAA tourney for a second straight year after falling to Rockhurst in a penalty-kick shootout last season.
The Panthers' 16 victories are the second-most in the program's history, trailing only the 21-2 campaign by Drury in Swan's first season as head coach (2009), when the Panthers reached the NCAA-II Sweet 16.
