Cameron Adams scored a season-high 30 points and added eight rebounds as No. 4 Drury held off a furious Cameron rally to defeat the Aggies 78-71 in the Doubletree Hotel/Houlihan's Thanksgiving Classic on Friday at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
The Panthers (3-1) raced off to a 43-24 halftime advantage, but watched Cameron (3-2) rally to tie it at 51-all with 12:22 left on a 3-pointer by Cameron Lee.
But Drury countered with an 8-0 run, including five points from Adams, to push the lead back to 59-51 with 11:03 left. The Aggies had another run left in them, cutting the deficit down to one (66-65) with 3:33 left.Â
It was a 68-67 DU lead with 2:19 to go when the Panthers scored the next four points - on on two Adams free throws and a bucket from freshman
Drew Moore - to gain some final breathing room before finishing it off at the line for the victory, the Panthers' 29th consecutive win at The O'.
"We got off to a very good start ... Cameron poses some problems for you on the offensive end, and you have to attack them differently than you would other people," Drury coach
Steve Hesser said. "I'm proud of the fact that we showed some grit and grind at the end, and that's something we'd been lacking in my opinion."
Mike Nwelue and Moore scored 11 points each for the Panthers, who forced 22 turnovers by the Aggies while committing just 13.Â
DaShaun Stark added six rebounds for the Panthers, who matched Cameron at 38-each on the boards.
Adams was 14 of 19 at the free-throw line in a game that saw the teams combine to shoot 72 free throws. His 30 points were just two off his career high of 32 set last March against Illinois Springfield.
Jamaal Brantley scored 21 points and Deondre Ray added 18 points for the Aggies.
Drury will play Missouri Western at 3:15 p.m. Saturday on "Hall of Fame Day" at The O', the final day of the Doubletree/Houlihan's Thanksgiving Classic. The Griffons lost 73-59 in Friday's opening game to East Central, which is coached by former DU assistant coach Ja Havens.
East Central will play Cameron in a 1 p.m. tipoff on Saturday.
