No. 6 Bellarmine Snaps DU Home Winning Streak With 62-58 Triumph

Nationally sixth-ranked Bellarmine played Drury streak-buster again, defeating the Panthers 62-58 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play to snap their 32-game winning streak at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.

Cameron Adams had 19 points to lead the Panthers, who fell to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the GLVC after falling at home for the first time since January 5, 2013, when Wisconsin-Parkside scored a 90-88 overtime victory. It was also only the sixth loss in 71 games for the Panthers in The O' since the arena opened in 2010.

Drury took it down to the wire again this time, trailing 60-58 in the closing seconds and shooting for the potential win or tie. But Kameron Bundy's attempt in heavy traffic with five seconds left was corralled by the Knights (12-1, 4-0).

After a Drury foul, Rusty Troutman made two free throws with two seconds left to seal it for Bellarmine, which also snapped the Panthers' school-record overall winning streak at 34 games 366 days ago in Louisville, Ky.

"I'll take responsibility," Drury coach Steve Hesser said. "We had a timeout previous to the sequence where Bundy went in there (at the end), and he took a poor shot ... but we were wasting time. We talked about what we wanted to do at the timeout. My assistants said with 20 seconds left, 'do you want to call timeout?' And I said we just talked about what we wanted to do.

"But then we wasted 10 seconds dribbling around up top ... my fault. I should have got them organized, and I should have called a timeout."

Freshman guard Trevor Clay was the only other Panther to reach double-figures with a career-high 10 points, including 3-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.

"Trevor showed some athleticism and the moment wasn't too big for him ... I'm proud of him," Hesser said. "I thought we had an excellent crowd, and excellent support as we always do ... thanks to Coach (Scott) Nasby for having his baseball guys come back early for this one. The reason we're able to win 32 in a row is we have the loyal support that we do and we're able to feed off the energy from it.

"We have to go forward. This game is not going to define our season unless we let it. We need to let it teach us some things. Bellarmine's a good basketball team, and we just need to go forward from here."

Jake Thelen, a 6-7 senior and preseason All-America selection, led the Knights with 20 points and nien rebounds. Josh Derksen added 14 points and Troutman finished with 11 points and matched Troutman with nine boards.

The Panthers closed the first half with a 12-4 run to earn a 32-31 lead at the break.

Bellarmine claimed a 31-29 advantage on the boards, and shot 43 percent from the field (18 of 42) to 39 percent by the Panthrers (19 of 49).

The Panthers return to action on the GLVC road next week, with games at Rockhurst in Kansas City on Thursday and William Jewell in Liberty on Saturday.
