Jackson's 42 Points Push Truman State Past Panthers 85-81

Seth Jackson scored 42 points, including a 25 of 30 effort at the free-throw line, to lift Truman State to an 85-81 victory over Drury in a Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division showdown Thursday night at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.

Jackson's effort lifted Truman to 15-5 overall and at 7-3 in the league, into what is now a three-way tie with Drury (13-5, 7-3) and Missouri-St. Louis (15-5, 7-3) for the GLVC West lead.

Jackson, a 6-4 senior and the GLVC's scoring leader at 20.8 points per game coming into the contest, made 7 of 11 field goals, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range, and wore out a path to the free-throw line in a game that saw the teams  whistled for a combined 50 fouls. Truman outscored the Panthers by 14 at the stripe, finishing 32 of 41 at the line while Drury was 18 of 28.

Reed Mells added 14 points and Cory Myers had 12 points for the Bulldogs, who shot 52 percent from the field (22 of 42), including 14 of 23 (61 percent) in the opening half in building a 46-42 lead over the Panthers behind 22 first-half points from Jackson on 6-of-7 shooting, who was on his way to setting a new O'Reilly Center scoring record.

"We were chasing all night," Drury coach Steve Hesser said. "Chasing is a bad defensive fundamental. It just seemed like we were always chasing (Jackson), and he did a nice job all night of cutting hard."

The Panthers grabbed a 51-50 lead on a monstrous dunk and free throw from Cameron Adams with 15:20 to go, but Jackson answered with a 3-pointer and the Bulldogs never trailed again. Drury had it down to a one-point deficit (78-77) after a Ben Fisher 3-pointer with 3:32 to go, but Truman made just enough free throws down the stretch - and the Panthers missed a few - to allow TSU to hand DU its second straight home-court loss and snap Drury's four-game win streak.

"We didn't do a very good job of executing in our half-court offense," Hesser said. "They were the tougher, more aggressive basketball team, so hat's off to them."

Adams finished with 21 points to lead the Panthers, hitting 5 of 7 from the floor and 11 of 13 from the line. Kameron Bundy added 17 points, but it came on 6-for-20 shooting for the reigning GLVC Player of the Week. He also had five assists and five steals and moved across the 1,000-point barrier for his career, now at 1,003.

Drew Moore, in his first collegiate start, had 10 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes, while fellow freshman Trevor Clay added 10 points, six rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes.

Drury shot 46 percent for the game, but made only 11 of 26 shots (42 percent) after halftime.

The Panthers are home again on Saturday for "Great Southern Throwback Day" with a 3:15 p.m. tipoff against West rival Quincy. Drury is holding a "Fan Appreciation Concert" on Friday night as part of Throwback weekend, featuring Boogie Wonderland from Kansas City starting at 8 p.m. at The O' and playing disco and soul hits from the 1970s and '80s. Admission is free for DU season ticket-holders, faculty/staff and students, and the general public is admitted for $5, which includes a free ticket to Saturday's Throwback doubleheader for the Lady Panthers (1 p.m.) and Panthers.
