Alice Heinzler came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points and lead No. 21 Drury to a 74-55 victory over Quincy to widen its lead in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West before 2,111 fans on "Great Southern Throwback Day" Saturday afternoon at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
The Lady Panthers, who've now won 13 of their last 14, improved to 16-3 overall and 10-1 in the GLVC, moving their lead in the West to three games over second-place Quincy (12-7, 7-4) with a dominating effort at The O'.
Drury led 40-25 at the half, holding the visiting Lady Hawks to just 32 percent shooting (9 of 28), and pushed the lead as high as 22 in the second half in winning their 21st game in their last 23 at home.Â
Shelby White added 13 points on 6 of 7 shooting, and
Sanayika Shields had eight points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Panthers, who held Quincy to 32 percent shooting for the game (18 of 57) as well.Â
"It feels good to get the win, especially when its a battle of 1 vs. 2 in the West," first-year DU coach
Molly Miller said. "To hold that spot at No. 1 pretty confidently after today is nice, because Quincy has a very good ballteam."
Heinzler gave the Lady Panthers the biggest lift on Saturday, as the College of the Ozarks transfer and former Republic High School standout scored 10 first-half points to get DU going. She also finished with seven rebounds and four assists in her 27 minutes in a reserve role.
"I'm really, really proud of Alice," Miller said. "She had a couple of tough games in St. Louis last weekend, so I'm really proud of her for the way she came out and got after it today."
Carly Beebe was the lone Quincy player to reach double-figures, finishing with 15 points and adding five steals. Maggie Cunningham and Cierra Young had six rebounds each for the Lady Hawks, who held a slim, final rebounding edge of 42-41.
With her 12 rebounds, Shields moved into seventh place on the all-time DU rebounding charts with 521 boards, surpassing Abby Bracker (512) and
Bethanie Funderburk (518). She needs eight to surpass Eric Groose (528) for sixth and 15 to move past Kara Rutledge (535) and into the Top 5.
The Lady Panthers continue their homestand next week, with Illinois Springfield visiting on Thursday (5:45 p.m. tipoff) before McKendree comes calling on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff on The Courts/The Fieldhouse Youth Sports Day - all kids who come to the game wearing a youth sports t-shirt or jersey from any sport can get their parents into the game for just $1 each. It will also feature a "Knockout" basketball game by age division and gender after the day's play, and an autograph poster party with both the Lady Panthers and Panthers that afternoon.
