ST. LOUIS -
Hannah Dressler scored a career-high 16 points to lead a balanced Lady Panthers scoring attack as No. 6 Drury remained unbeaten with a 74-65 victory at Missouri-St. Louis in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams Thursday night at the Mark Twain Building.
Annie Armstrong added 12 points as the Lady Panthers moved to 6-0 overall. UMSL fell to 3-4.
"It was a little ugly at times, but we'll take ugly wins on the road," Drury coach
Molly Miller said. "
Hannah Dressler did a good job in the post, and of getting herself open and getting to the free-throw line.
"I kind of felt like we came right off the bus and were a little sluggish to start with, but pulled it through. It's always tough for us here ... tonight seemed like a little bit of a 'throw everything at you' type of game.' We knew they were going to get after us defensively, the way we'd been shooting."
Drury led just 18-16 after one quarter and 34-29 at the half - after trailing by as many as five in the second period - before grabbing some cushion with a big third quarter, outscoring the Tritons 24-16 for a 58-45 lead heading into the final period. It was 41-37 when freshman
Emily Miller (career-high nine points) scored on back-to-back jumpers, and after a pair of UMSL free throws, junior guard
Paige Wilson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Drury lead to double-digits.
The Lady Panthers continued their hot shooting with a 22-for-39 effort fom the field (56 percent), including 8-of-18 shooting (44 percent) from 3-point range, where Drury entered the week leading the nation in shooting from behind the arc at 51 percent.
The Lady Panthers got a strong shooting night from the freshman Miller, who made her only 3-point try and went 4-of-5 from the field, adding three rebounds and three steals in her 19 minutes of playing time.
"
Emily Miller is getting better and more comfortable each game," Coach Miller said. "She's finally figuring out the pace of the college game, and is starting to adapt and to find her strengths and weaknesses."
Kelly Kunkel had 18 points to lead four Tritons in double-figures, with Sydney Bloch adding 12 points, Robneisha Lee 11 points and Jordan Flechter 10 points. UMSL claimed a final 26-24 advantage on the boards, with Kunkel grabbing seven to lead the Tritons and Dressler snagging six to pace DU. Dressler edged her previous career high of 15 points set last season against Rockhurst.
The Lady Panthers continue the St. Louis swing on Saturday, when they visit Maryville for a 1 p.m. GLVC tipoff.Â
