KENOSHA, Wis. - Drury dug itself a double-digit hole in the first half and couldn't fully recover Saturday afternoon, falling 64-53 at No. 12 Wisconsin-Parkside in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Panthers (16-7, 10-5) trailed by as many as 18 points early in the second half against the Rangers (22-2, 14-1), but rallied to trail by just four points (57-53) with 2:26 to play.Â
But the Rangers countered with a big 3-pointer on the next trip down from Espen Fjaerestad to start a 7-0 run to finish the game, and DU was out of runs as the Panthers went 0-2 on the Lewis/Parkside road swing, their final regular season games away from the O'Reilly Family Event Center this season.Â
Drury received a scare when senior forward
Cameron Adams - who led the Panthers with 14 points  - left the game midway through the second half after a hard fall while leaping over a Parkside player in a rebound attempt. Adams left the floor under his own power with a smile on his face, but then left the bench area with trainer
Mark Ortiz and retreated to the locker room. Drury's head athletic trainer,
Erin Kineman, later confirmed afterward that Adams suffered a lower back injury and was dealing with spasms after leaving the contest. He'll be reevaluated when the team returns to Springfield.
"Give Parkside credit ... they're an outstanding ballclub," Drury coach
Steve Hesser said. "We dug ourselves too big a hole in the first half, and they just executed better than we did. When we got it down to five, we gave up two layups ... and that's just a backbreaker.Â
"It was a good job by our guys for battling and getting back into it."
And Drury did get some good news later, as an Indianapolis victory at Truman State helped the Panthers maintain their one-game lead in the GLVC West standings over the Bulldogs with three games remaining.
Kameron Bundy, the returning All-GLVC performer, went 2-for-11 from the floor and finished 3-for-20 for the two-game road stretch. Bundy did manage nine points and six assists on Saturday against a Rangers defense clearly focused on slowing him down.
"Until you get in the Men's Over 30 League, people are going to try to guard you ... you've got to find a way to combat that," Hesser said of Bundy's struggles. "But we also need some others to step up and help out."
Zygimantas Riauka led the Rangers with 11 points and Jimmy Gavin had 10 for a Parkside team that shot 50 percent (25 of 50) and limited the Panthers to 40 percent (19 of 48), including a 6-for-21 effort in the first half in falling behind by as many as 15 points before trailing 30-17 at the break.
Drury returns home to face William Jewell at 8 p.m. Thursday before entertaining Rockhurst on Saturday (3:15 p.m.) in the annual Homecoming and Overflow The O' game. The Panthers will also retire the jerseys of former greats Alex Hall and Brandon Lockhart between games of the Lady Panthers/Panthers doubleheader, at approximately 3 p.m.Â
