AUSTIN, Texas - Senior first baseman
Luke Tewes blasted three home runs - a school single-game record - and drove in six to lead Drury to a 6-2 victory over St. Edward's in the season-opening doubleheader for the Panthers here on Friday.
St. Edward's, ranked No. 28 in the Collegiate Baseball Magazine national poll this week to Drury's No. 22, defeated the Panthers 8-0 in the seven-inning opener Friday.
The Hilltoppers are now 7-5 on the year to Drury's 1-1.
Tewes, who led the Panthers with seven homers and a school-record 62 RBIs last season, went 3-for-4 in the second game, with a solo homer in the third, another solo blast in the sixth and a grand slam in the seventh to account for all of Drury's runs.
Austin Faulconer (1-0), was the starter and winner, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out four in 6 1/3 innings before giving way to relievers
Nick Costantino and
Gage Jacobs.
Tewes became the first DU player to have three homers in a game. Eight DU players had hit two in one contest previously, including Tewes, who blasted a pair against Fort Hays State last April. He matched his own career high for RBIs in a game with six, which he accomplished also in that Fort Hays State game last season.
St. Edward's pinned the loss in the opener on Drury ace
Trevor Richards, getting to him for two in the first on a two-run single by catcher Joseph Olson, and then chasing him with a six-run sixth that broke open a 2-0 game. St. Edward's scored all six runs after two were out, with Olson's two-run single capping the scoring.
The Panthers managed just three hits in the opener, including a double from
Dallas Williams.
The teams will play a doubleheader again on Saturday with a noon start time.
