Panthers To Play For GLVC Title After Winning 68-67 OT Thriller Vs Parkside

ST. CHARLES - No. 2 seed Drury will play top seed Bellarmine for a Great Lakes Valley Conference title on Sunday after the Panthers outlasted nationally eighth-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside 68-67 in overtime in the GLVC Championship tourney semifinals Saturday at the Family Arena.

Coach Steve Hesser's Panthers improved to 4-0 in overtime games this year by picking up their second straight GLVC tourney contest in an extra session, having defeated UMSL 70-65 in OT in Thursday's quarterfinals.

This one not only meant a date opposite top seed, nationally No. 2-ranked and Midwest Regional top-ranked Bellarmine in Sunday's 1 p.m. final - the Knights (27-2) came from 14 points down to defeat 4-seed Indianapolis 81-73 in Saturday's other semifinal - but pushed Drury to another 20-win season (20-8), the Panthers' ninth in 11 seasons under Hesser, who has the Panthers seeking their third GLVC title to with those won in 2008 and 2013.

And, of primary concern, it kept alive DU's hopes of a third straight NCAA-II tourney bid alive. The Panthers would clinch the automatic berth with a victory against the Knights on Sunday, otherwise hoping their post-season surge - including a big victory over region No. 2-ranked Parkside (26-3) - could push them into the top eight in Sunday night's final Midwest Region rankings.

Saturday's game was a near mirror image of DU's win over UMSL on Thursday at Family Arena, as the Panthers dug themselves a hole early, clawed their way back into it late, and made just enough plays at the end to survive and advance.

"Let me say thanks to the people who made it up here to support our Drury men's and women's teams, because we needed their energy ... and they provided it," Hesser said. "We just kind of hung in there, didn't look good at times, but hung in there and kept playing and finally got some shots to go down and got some stops when we needed to, and we were able to sneak out of here with the victory."

This time, it was two free throws by Kameron Bundy with six seconds left that provided the difference, as Parkside turned it over afterward before the Rangers got a shot at a potential OT game-winner.

Bundy scored a game-high 28 points - matching his career high set in the OT win at UMSL earlier this season - and added seven rebounds in his 43 minutes of play. His 16 first-half points out of Drury's 25 (the Panthers trailed 32-25 at the break) kept DU within striking range.

There were other heroes. DaShaun Stark scored a bucket with 21 seconds left - off a great pass from senior post-season standout Ben Fisher - to knot the score at 60 and force overtime.

And in the extra period, after the Panthers fell behind 65-62, Stark and Drake Patterson hit a couple of free throws each to give DU the lead at 66-65 with 2:04 to play.

The teams traded misses for the next minute and a half, before Parkside's Kendale McCollum scored on a short jumper with 33 seconds left to put the Rangers on top (67-66). The Panthers and Rangers then had an empty possession each until Bundy's two free throws with six seconds remaining put Drury on top to stay, with Parkside turning it over with one second left before the chance at a last-second attempt.

Cameron Adams - who played just two first-half minutes after picking up two fouls in the game's first 56 seconds - finished with 10 points and matched Bundy's team-leading seven rebounds in his 27 minutes of action, adding a pair of blocked shots and steals for the Panthers, who won despite shooting just 39 percent from the field (23 of 59) and going 6 of 19 from 3-point range.

But Drury forced 16 Parkside turnovers while committing just 12 and limited the Rangers to 44 percent shooting (22 of 50). They also kept 6-9 senior Zygimantas Riauka in check, holding him to six points and eight rebounds in 27 minutes.

Jimmy Gavin put on a shooting display for the Rangers, hitting several very deep 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 25 points. Andy Mazurczak and Jordan Mach added 12 points each for Parkside, which had defeated Drury 64-53 in Kenosha, Wis., on February 14.

Now the Panthers get a chance to avenge a 62-58 loss to Bellarmine at the O'Reilly Family Event Center on January 10, one that snapped DU's school-record, 32-game home court winning streak at the time.

"We get to play on Sunday, and that's what we came up here to do," Hesser said. "Don't forget to set your clocks ahead one hour."

DU-BELLARMINE NOTES

*Drury leads the all-time series with Bellarmine 9-5, but the Knights have won the past two meetings. Not only did their 62-58 win at The O' on January 10 snap the Panthers' 32-game home court winning streak, but Bellarmine's 85-77 win on January 9, 2014 in Louisville snapped the defending national champion Panthers' school-record overall winning streak at 34 games, which was the longest streak in the nation at any NCAA level the time.

*The Knights feature the league's Most Valuable Player in 6-7 senior Jake Thelen. who averages 18.0 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. He's one of five Knights scoring in double-figures for veteran coach Scott Davenport's BU squad.

*Bellarmine has won 15 consecutive games since suffering a 67-62 loss at Indianapolis on January 15. The Knights' only other loss was a 101-96 setback to top-ranked Florida Southern at home on December 13.

*Adams' seven rebounds on Saturday give him 646 for his career, while his 10 points pushed him to 1,480. He ranks 16th in scoring and now tied for 15th in rebounding on the all-time DU charts.

*Bundy's 28 points matched a career high, and also pushed his career point total to 1,180, ranking him 26th on the all-time DU list (Steven Gum is 25th at 1,205). His 485 points this season are the 40th most in DU history.

*Hesser is now 13-4 all-time in overtime games and 56-23 in his 11-year career in games decided by five points or less.
