EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Southern Indiana downed the Drury softball Panthers 6-1 and 8-0 in their GLVC openers here on Friday.
Drury is now 6-12 and Southern Indiana improved to 14-8.
In the opener Southern Indiana used a pair of third inning RBI doubles to claim a 3-0 lead. USI added a pair of RBI singles and a homer by Grace Clark in the fifth to make it a 6-0.
Chantal Oelrich hit her second homer of the year in the top of the seventh. Drury loaded the bases in the seventh but could draw no closer.
Southern Indiana racked up 10 hits and held Drury to four hits coming from
Kelley Conway,
Grace Hargadon, Oelrich and
Karlie Peck.
Shelby Weissenbach (5-6) received the loss for Drury and Sarah Owens (4-1) earned the win for USI. Both pitchers recorded six strikeouts in the game.
In the nightcap Marleah Fossett homered to give the Screaming Eagles a 2-0 lead in the second then Lexi Reese hit a three run homer in the third to make it 5-0 USI and they added an RBI sac bunt to make it 6-0 after four innings. Lexi Hodges hit the Screaming Eagles third homer of the game to make it 7-0.
Kaelie Smith paced the Panthers with three hits and Oelrich and Conway added two each to finish with eight hits with USI getting 10 hits.
Jessica Kjeldgaard (0-6) suffered the loss and Hayley Smith (4-4) got the win for USI.
Drury will continue GLVC road play at Bellarmine on Saturday with games starting at 11 a.m. Central Standard Time.
