KANSAS CITY - Rockhurst defeated Drury 8-3 in the opener and finished off a four-game sweep of the Panthers with an 11-7 triumph in the finale in their Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball series that concluded here on Sunday.
The Panthers fell to 13-28 overall and 5-15 in the league while pushing their losing streak to nine straight. Rockhurst improved to 23-18 overall and leads the GLVC West at 14-6.
In the nine-inning nightcap, the Hawks grabbed control with a four-run fourth to break up a scoreless due, and after Drury countered with two in the fifth, Rockhurst answered with two in the bottom of the frame for a 6-2 advantage.Â
Drury came back with two more in the seventh to cut it to 6-4, but the Hawks put it way with four more runs in the bottom of the inning to push the advantage to 10-4.
Ryan Colombo, Stephan Alonzo and
Ryan Wadkins had two hits each for the Panthers, who were out-hit 13-11.Â
Austin Simms gave up eight runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings to take the loss for Drury.
In the opener, Drury grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second - on a hit-by-pitch, a walk and a sacrifice fly for RBIs - but saw the Hawks answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning, then score three in the fourth off starter
Trey Faulconer to seize a 5-3 lead.Â
Rockhurst put it away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 8-3 lead.
The Panthers had five hits, including a 2-for-3 effort from
Marcus Enloe, in the opener.
Drury will play Rogers State in a non-conference game at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Meador Park before playing a four-game GLVC set at Maryville in St. Louis next weekend (Parkway South High School).
