SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury scored two goals in the first half after a one hour, 45-minute weather delay and shutout the William Jewell Cardinals 2-0 at Harrison Stadium / Curry Sports Complex on Sunday.
The Panthers improved to 5-3 and 4-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. William Jewell dropped to 1-5 and 0-5 in the league.
The game was scoreless in the 25
th minute when lightning was detected and led to a nearly two-hour delay. Six minutes after play resumed,
Ben Bruce put Drury on the board with his fourth goal of the year. Then, with less than a minute to play before halftime,
Brody Johnson put Drury in front 2-0 finding the net from 12 yards out. It was the first career collegiate goal for the freshman from Springfield-Parkview.
William Jewell made a push down the stretch and put up nine shots in the second half but Panthers goalkeeper
Nic Helin made five saves to pick up the 11
th shutout of his career. Drury outshot the Cardinals 19-11 in the game.
The Panthers are on the road for their next game as they travel to seventh-ranked Rockhurst. The game is a rematch of last year's NCAA-II third round tournament game that ended in a shootout win for the Hawks after Drury forced a regulation and overtime tie, 1-1. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo. on Friday.
