SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– The Quincy Hawks held off a frantic Drury rally in the final 25 minutes and hung on for a 2-1 win at Harrison Stadium/Curry Sports Complex on Sunday.
The loss snapped a four-game unbeaten streak for the Panthers as they dropped to 2-9-3 and 2-6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Drury had gone 2-0-2 in their previous four games. Quincy improved to 7-7-1 and 6-3-1 in the conference.
The Hawks got on the board in the 29th minute as Aubrey Reis converted a penalty kick for his league-leading 14th goal of the season. Reis scored again early in the second half to give Quincy a 2-0 lead.
Drury battled back, and
Mitchell Vaughn got the Panthers within striking distance with his second goal of the season set up with an assist from
Logan Favreau in the 69th minute.
Drury pressured the Quincy defense late in the game as seven of the Panthers 12 shots in the contest came in the final 25 minutes.
Jamie O'Brien nearly evened the score with 9:10 remaining as he got through the Hawks defense and fired a shot that hit the crossbar. O'Brien had a four-game goal scoring streak snapped in Sunday's loss.
The Panthers outshot Quincy 12-9 and O'Brien had four shots to lead Drury.
Drury opens a three-game road stint on Friday when they travel to Indianapolis for a 6:30 p.m. (Central) game against the Greyhounds.
