Prairie Stars take two from Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.— Illinois Springfield used their offense to power their way to a doubleheader sweep of the Drury Panthers winning game one 14-6 and game two 10-3 on Sunday in Springfield, Illinois. The Prairie Stars had 31 hits in the two games combined as they improved to 18-7-1 and 9-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while Drury fell to 14-16 and 7-7 in the league.

The Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in game one, but Illinois Springfield's offense came to life as they scored five runs in the third inning to take the lead.

Drury responded, though, and took the lead back an inning later on Clayton Engle's two-run homer. The Prairie Stars put up another five-run frame to take the lead for good in the fifth on their way to a 14-run, 16-hit performance.

Engel led the Panthers going 3 for 5 with two runs, three runs batted in, a steal, and the home run was his first of the year.

Tyler James (0-1) took the loss in relief for Drury while Justin Revels (4-1) got the win for Illinois Springfield.

In game two, the Prairie Stars built a 6-0 lead early, but the Panthers cut it in half with two runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth inning. UIS closed the game out, however, with four more runs as Chris Monroe went 3 for 6 with three RBI's, and Austin Alderman went 4 for 5 at the plate.

Kaden Helsel (3-4) took the loss for Drury while Andrew Dean (5-0) got the win allowing only four hits and one earned run in his seven innings of work.

The three-game series concludes on Monday with a game at noon at UIS Baseball Park in Springfield, Illinois.
