KIRKSVILLE, Mo.— Drury scored 11 runs in both of their games on Saturday as they swept Truman State in a doubleheader winning game one 11-5 and game two 11-1 in eight innings at Truman Baseball Park in Kirksville, Missouri.
The Panthers improved to 18-17 and 11-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the Bulldogs dropped to 5-22 and 5-14 in the league.
The Panthers recovered from a near-disastrous start in game one to win 11-5. Drury pitching walked six batters in the first inning as Truman State scored three times in the opening frame on bases-loaded walks to take an early lead.
The Panthers answered with two runs in the top of the second, then took the lead erupting for seven runs in the fifth.
Aaron Mann and
Nikko Calabro started Drury's scoring in the inning with back-to-back RBI doubles.
Ryan Kayhill would later pick up an RBI single, as did
Brant Schaffitzel. Drury also got runs in the frame on a sacrifice fly by
Ethan Owens and two more runs scored on a Truman State error.
Drury pitching walked 12 batters in the game but only allowed five runs on six hits.
Kaden Helsel (4-4) got the win in relief going 6.1 innings allowing four hits and no runs with four walks and six strikeouts. Connor McKenna (0-5) took the loss for Truman State.
Collin Fraley went 4 for 5 at the plate for Drury in game one and scored two runs.
The Panthers struck first in game two and grabbed first inning lead when
Brant Schaffitzel opened the game with a base on balls and eventually scored
Aaron Mann's ground ball.
Drury added three more runs in the fourth scoring on
Jackson Dierenfeldt's two-RBI single, and a bases-loaded walk to Mann.
The Panthers ended the game early scoring six runs in the eighth inning to take an 11-1 lead. Drury scored six runs on five hits and took advantage of a Truman State error in building a 10-run lead.
Drury starter
Tom Tewes (5-2) recorded three outs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Panthers a run-rule win. Tewes went eight innings and allowed five hits and one run with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Mann ended the game going 2 for 4 with a run and three RBI's while Dierenfeldt went 2 for 3 with three RBI's.
The Panthers conclude their three-game series at Truman State on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for noon in Kirksville, Missouri.
