KIRKSVILLE, Mo.— Drury scored at least one run in their first six innings and in eight of the nine frames on Sunday in a 14-7 win over Truman State in Kirksville, Missouri.
The Panthers completed a three-game series sweep of the Bulldogs and improved to 19-17 and 12-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while Truman State fell to 5-23 and 5-15 in the league.
Drury scored three runs in the first inning but gave up three in the bottom half of the frame. They re-established their lead in the second inning on
Clayton Engel's two-run home run that gave the Panthers a 5-3 lead and Drury never trailed again.
The Panthers built a 9-4 lead in the fifth, but the Bulldogs scored three times in the bottom half of the inning to pull within two, 9-7.
Drury responded with three runs in the sixth scoring on a bases-loaded walk to
Jackson Dierenfeldt, a ground ball by
Cole Dunham, and a wild pitch that scored
Brant Schaffitzel.
The Panthers tacked on runs in the eighth and ninth and the only inning they failed to score in was the seventh.
Collin Fraley went 4 for 6 at the plate with a double, two runs scored, three runs batted in and a stolen base. The junior from Ozark moved from center field to close the game out on the mound pitching an inning of scoreless relief in the ninth.
Dierenfeldt went 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBI's.
Alex Austin (2-2) got the win in relief going 3.1 innings allowing two hits and no runs with one walk and four strikeouts. Caleb Buehrle (3-1) took the loss for Truman State.
The win is Drury's fourth in a row and is their fifth victory in their last six games.
The Panthers are back on the road on Tuesday when they play at Missouri S&T for a single conference game starting at 2 pm in Rolla.
