JOPLIN, Mo.– In a moment befitting of Friday The 13th, Missouri Southern scored on a deflection as time expired to break a scoreless tie and defeat the Drury Panthers on Friday night at Hughes Stadium in Joplin.
In the closing seconds, Lions forward Jessica Edwards sent a cross that deflected off a Drury defender and into the net with one second remaining.
The goal erased a Drury performance that saw the Panthers out-shoot Missouri Southern 14-10. The Panthers put eight shots on goal, not including a
Kayla Day strike that hit the post late in the first half. The Lions were credited with six shots on target.
Riley Laver had eight saves for the Lions in the win while
Kaitlin Knetzke stopped five shots for Drury.
The loss drops the Panthers to 0-2-1 while Missouri Southern improved to 1-2.
Drury opens their Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule on Sunday when they travel to Southwest Baptist for a game starting at noon in Bolivar, Missouri.
