Drury ties McKendree 1-1; maintains hold on first place in GLVC

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– The Drury Panthers stayed ahead of McKendree in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings after battling the Bearcats to a 1-1 tie at Harrison Stadium on Sunday.

Drury went to 10-2-1 and 8-1-1 in the GLVC, while McKendree moved their record to 9-2-3 and 7-2-2 in the league.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal from Kennedy Thompson in the 14th minute. Tara Simon sent a ball downfield to Elsa Gonzalez, who found Thompson in front of the net for her second goal of the season.

After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Bearcats tied the score early in the second half on a goal from Destiny Johnson, her second of the year.

Drury had a chance late in regulation, but McKendree goalkeeper Mercedes King made a diving save with 1:40 remaining to keep the game tied. Both squads had three shots in the two overtime periods.

With the tie, the Panthers maintained their hold on first place in the GLVC. Drury has just one conference loss, while McKendree, Truman State, and Indianapolis all have a pair of losses. DU has 25 points in the standings and leads McKendree's 23. Truman State is 6-2-3 (21 points), and UIndy has 19 points with a 6-2-1 mark in the league. Four games remain in the regular season.
