SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—For the second time in their last three games, the Drury Panthers came from two sets down to win 3-2 as they knocked off Missouri-St. Louis in five sets on Friday in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
Drury improved to 14-8 and 5-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Tritons suffered just their second conference loss as they dropped to 15-6 and 8-2 in the league.
UMSL dominated the opening set, winning 25-15, then pulled away for a 25-19 victory in the second. The Panthers rallied for a 25-23 win in the third set, then forced the match to five sets with a 25-17 victory in the fourth.
The Tritons jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth set, then owned a 10-7 lead before Drury charged back to take eight of the last nine points.
"I want our team to learn the importance of starting strong and what we can do from the beginning so we don't have to work as hard," said Drury head coach
Jenifer Bahner. "But, I am proud of our girls in that they showed maturity. It's a mental fight that you have to have when you're down 0-2, and they were able to fight through some adversity and get the win."
Maddie Baumer led the Panthers with 19 kills and three block assists, while
Chloe Rear added 48 assists and 15 digs.
Juliana Squire provided a game-high 25 digs.
Charlotte Richards had 19 kills and 18 digs for UMSL, while Kaileen Hannewald added 49 assists.
Drury is back at home on Saturday when they host Maryville for a 3 pm game in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
