Late goal lifts Panthers to 2-1 win over No. 19 Maryville

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A highlight-reel goal by Sabastian Smeed in the 87th minute kept Drury unbeaten in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as the Panthers upended 19th ranked Maryville 2-1 on Friday at Harrison Stadium in Springfield.

The win extended Drury's unbeaten streak to nine games as they improved to 5-1-5 overall, 3-0-4 in the GLVC and they are now the only team in the league without a conference loss. The Saints fell to 7-4-1 and 6-1-1 in the GLVC.

Smeed scored his first goal in the year on a bicycle kick on a ball that ricochetted to him following an initial shot by Jung So. The goal broke a 1-1 deadlock as the Panthers hung on the final 3:24 of regulation.

After a scoreless first half that Maryville controlled, outshooting Drury 10-0 in the first 45 minutes, the Panthers opened the second half with pressure on the Saints net. Nathan Logue broke through for Drury with his third goal of the season, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

Maryville evened the game in the 80th minute as Cedric Sengl wove through defenders and scored his third goal of the year.

Drury, though, would get the game-winner less than seven minutes later, putting up a pair of shots that had the Saints defense scrambling, resulting in Smeed's tally that gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead.

Maryville had a 13-7 advantage in shots, but both goalkeepers made three saves as Tyler Frolik stopped three shots as did the Saints Albert Escuin.

The win puts Drury at 4-0-5 in their last nine games.

The Panthers continue their homestand on Sunday as they host Missouri-St. Louis at 2:30 pm at Harrison Stadium.
