SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– Playing at home for the first time this season, the Drury Panthers got a goal in each half and held off Missouri Southern State for a 2-0 win at Harrison Stadium / Curry Sports Complex on Sunday.
It marked Drury's fourth straight shutout to start the season as they improved to 3-0-1 while the Lions fell to 0-3.
The Panthers got on the board in the 16
th minute as
Tara Simon, last year's Freshman of the Year in the GLVC, scored her first goal of the season as
Elsa Gonzalez's pass found the sophomore in perfect position for a shot. Drury controlled play with a 1-0 lead, but Missouri Southern nearly tied the game in the 82
nd minute as a shot by Aisley Stevens forced Panthers goalkeeper
Kaitlin Knetzke to make a lunging save.
Drury put the game away two minutes later as
Mel Schneider put in a shot after a flurry of Panthers shots in the 83rd minute for her second goal of the season.
Annalise Hamel, who ran more than 60 yards downfield to track down the ball and set up the shot, picked up the assist.
Drury had the advantage in shots 24-4. All four of Missouri Southern's shots were on-target, giving Knetzke four saves and her fourth shutout of 2022.
The Panthers open their Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule in their game as they travel to Quincy on Sun., Sept. 11. Kickoff is at noon in Quincy, Ill.
