Two second half goals lift Drury past Truman State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Drury Panthers scored twice in the second half to come from behind and defeat Truman State 2-1 at Harrison Stadium on Sunday.

Drury, who is 2-0-1 in their last three games, lifted their record to 2-4-4 and 2-2-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Truman State dropped to 4-3 and 3-2 in the league.

The Bulldogs got on the board first, converting on a penalty kick by Caden Hoehns in the 42nd minute.

The Panthers evened the game early in the second half, though, as J.J. Adikwu scored his second goal of the year and John Clout earned the assist in the 52nd minute.

"I was just relieved when I saw it go in," said Adikwu. "The team had been playing so well and we deserved to get something out of the way things were going. (That goal) got us some energy back and then when Lui scored, I thought, this is exactly what we needed."

Drury took the lead in the 77th minute as Lui Bull snuck a shot past the Bulldogs keeper from the left wing for his second goal of the season. Jason Puente was credited with the assist on what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

"I tried to find the net-post so the keeper couldn't see it as well," said Bull. "I'm just glad it went in after going a few weeks without getting too many goals. I think we've been able to open things up now."

"We saw some difficult competition early and I think it's taken some time for this team to jell," added Adikwu. "But it feels like it's coming to together and in the last few games I think we're learning what it's going to take to get to another level."

The goal was Bull's second in the three games, while Adikwu has picked up goals in back-to-back contests.

Truman State made a late push and nearly tied the game, but Drury goalkeeper Camden Meyer made a diving save on a ball that was just inside the left post. Meyer saw 10 shots and made three saves in the win.

Drury goes on the road for their next game as they head to Quincy for a Friday contest at 7:30 p.m. in Quincy, Illinois.
