SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– The Drury Panthers extended their unbeaten streak to nine games with a 2-0 win over Truman State at Harrison Stadium on Sunday.
Drury lifted their record to 8-1-1 and maintained their hold in first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 5-0-1 mark in the league. The Panthers are the only GLVC team without a loss through the first three weeks of the league schedule. Truman State dropped to 3-4-3 and 1-3-2 in the conference.
After a scoreless first half, the Panthers got on the board in the 54
th minute as
Kourtney Tucker scored her second goal with assists from
Ines Villanueva Casal and
Halley Kemmer.
Tucker, a senior from Springfield-Central, would factor in on another goal nine minutes later as she set up
Elsa Gonzalez for her second goal of the season.
"Backside runs are something I like to do in that position, and it felt really good to finally score off of it," said Tucker. "I usually see the other side wingback with the ball, and (on my goal) I started inching forward, watching the play. I got a perfect placement, and I just wanted to get something on it, so it was great it went in."
Drury peppered Truman State goalie Tatumn Damron, who was last week's national Defensive Player of the Week in NCAA-II, with 36 shots. Damron saw 17 in the first half and made four saves to keep the Panthers off the board, but Drury got two past her in the second half and ended the game with a total of 10 shots on goal.
Kaitlin Knetzke made three saves and recorded her seventh shutout of the year.
"This was a good win as Truman is a really good defensive team," said Drury head coach
Justin Olson. "We were able to get a goal early in the second half, and it only takes one goal to win games, but it was good that we kept the momentum and got a second one. I liked our energy and how we attacked today."
Drury is on the road for their next game as they travel to Quincy for a 5 p.m. match in Quincy, Illinois.
