SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– Drury converted a penalty kick early in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and hung on to defeat William Jewell 2-1 on Senior Day at Harrison Stadium on Sunday in Springfield.
The Panthers improved to 4-6-5 and 4-4-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Cardinals fell to 0-11-4 and 0-8-4 in the GLVC.
William Jewell struck early as Alexis Ibarra slammed in a shot from the top of the penalty area in the third minute for his fourth goal of the season.
Drury answered in the 17
th minute as senior and Monett product
Jason Puente tied the game with his first goal of the year. John Cloud and
Lucas Schofield both earned assists as they set up Puente from a free kick.
The Panthers took the lead in the 52
nd minute after the Cardinals were called for a handball in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick for Drury.
Jacob Schmidt put in the attempt for his second goal of the season and put the Panthers in front 2-1.
"It was a great win by the boys – we'll take the three points," said Puente. "Hopefully, we'll have some momentum going into next weekend.
"(Today) was very heart-warming for me. It didn't really kick in until a couple of hours before that this was my last game at Drury. So I'm glad I came out with a goal and a win and I'm grateful for the boys."
Drury hung on from there as
Tyler Frolik, making his first start of the season in goal, got the win. The senior saw six shots and made one save.
The Panthers owned a 22-6 advantage in shots and had six on goal.
Drury travels to Missouri-St. Louis for their next game and will take on the Tritons on Friday at 5 p.m. in St. Louis.
