Drury men's team wins GLVC Championship; women's team is league runner-up

EVANSVILLE, Ind.— The Drury men's swimming & diving team won the 2023 Great Lakes Valley Conference championship on Saturday, while the DU women's team was the league runner-up on Saturday at the Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville, Indiana.
 
The Panthers men's team finished with 1,623 points and won their sixth GLVC title in the 10 years the league has hosted the championship. Indianapolis was second with 1,503 points, and McKendree was third with 1,353.
 
The Drury women's team had 1,758 points to finish behind Indianapolis' total of 1,866. McKendree was third with 1,215 points.
 
Men's Highlights from Saturday
  • Nathan Bighetti was the league champ in the 200 Back with a time of 1:44.11 to win the title by just 0.20 seconds; Andrew Rodriguez was third in that event (1:45.71) 
  • Drury had five swimmers in the top eight in the 1650 Free as Symon Kapala came in second posting a time of 15:30.33, while Colby Hughes was fourth (15:37.24), Ivan Dubinin was sixth (15:47.71), Josue Hernandez came in seventh (15:49.68), and Anisse Djaballah was eighth (15:50.27) 
  • Oskar Sawicki was sixth in the 100 Free with a time of 44.64
  • Davi Mouaro was the runner-up in the 200 Breaststroke (1:58.21)
  • Drury's 400 Free Relay team was third as Dominik Karacic, Sawiki, Mourao, and Djaballah combined for a time of 2:59.15
 
Women's Highlights from Saturday
  • Lexie Waller won the conference championship in the 200 Back posting a time of 1:56.06 and won by more than two seconds. Aurora Duncan was sixth in that event (2:01.67), while Kia Moerk was seventh (2:05.91) 
  • Claire Conover won her third individual event of the GLVC Championships taking the title in the 200 Breaststroke (2:13.98), while Mellie Wijk was third (2:16.02), and Luisa Machado came in sixth (2:19.42)
  • Bruna de Padua was ninth in the 1650 Free (17:33.78)
  • The Panthers finished 3-4-5 in the 100 Free as Ashlyn Moore was third (50.60), Josie Bushell (51.00) was fourth, and Ellie Walker 51.28 came in fifth (51.28)
  • Drury was second in the 400 Free Relay as Walker, Josie Bushell, Moore, and Wijk had a time of 3:22.49 and were edged by Indianapolis' time of 3:21.60
Drury will host a Last Chance Qualifying meet on Feb. 18 at the Breech Pool, and both teams will return to fully compete at the NCAA-II National Championships March 8-11 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
