ST. LOUIS, Mo.– The Drury Panthers continued conference play with a 2-1 loss at the number 12 ranked Maryville Saints.
Drury falls to 0-4-3, 0-2-1 in the GLVC while the Saints move to 5-1-1, 2-1-0 in conference.
The Panthers went into this matchup looking to get their first win of the season whilst Maryville was looking to not only bounce back from a defeat last Sunday to Quincy but also avenge the upset that took place a year prior at Drury.
The first half started strong for both sides with Maryville holding a seven-to-four edge in shots, but the Panthers were the ones to strike first. In his first game back from injury,
Mason Booth headed home a
Nico Navarro corner in the 29
th minute to give the visitors the lead. The score remained the same at halftime with both sides having three shots on target each.
At the start of the second half, the Saints looked like the better side as the hosts leveled the score when Tim Smith played a ball forward to Bryce Glisson on the right wing. The senior forward whipped the ball into the box and Luca Bartoni placed it past goalkeeper
Camden Meyer for the equalizer.
The pressure did not stop there from the Saints, as Maryville was able to limit Drury to only three shots in the second half, none of them on target. The Saints were able to place five of their nine shots on target, not including the game-winner which was a Drury own goal. A corner kick by Marcus Kalebo took a deflection off a Drury Panther, leading to the Maryville goal in the 80
th minute. The Panthers could not find an answer in the end, as the Saints ran off victors.
Maryville outshot the Panthers 16-7, placing seven on goal compared to Drury's three.
Camden Meyer made six saves for Drury, as Maryville stopper Nick Hemann only had to make two.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 24 against Missouri S&T in Rolla. Kickoff will be at 2:30 pm.
