Panthers hold off Missouri S&T for road win

ROLLA, Mo. – The Drury Panthers got two first-half goals and hung on for a 2-1 win at Missouri S&T on Sunday afternoon in Rolla, Missouri. Drury improved to 1-4-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Miners fell to 2-5-1 and 1-3 in the league.

The Panthers got on the board in the 20th minute as John Clout notched his first goal of the year, scoring on an assist from Jakob Limpert.

"We wanted to get off the mat early and start strong," said Clout. "Our game plan was, for the first 15 minutes, to go high and go long and we were able to do that. I have to give credit to Limpert for a really nice, long throw-in that I was able to score off of."

Just seconds before halftime, Drury scored again to go up 2-0 as Lui Bull put a ball into the lower right portion of the net for his first goal of the season.

Missouri S&T threatened as they got back in the game on a goal in the 71st minute by Mike Banazik.

The Panthers hung on from there as the Miners outshot Drury 16-11 and had six shots on goal to the Panthers five. Camden Meyer got the win for Drury in net, making five saves. Lucas Schofield had five shots and one on goal to lead the Panthers.

"We needed to get one in the win column," said Drury head coach Ben Taylor. "It's easy to look from the outside, see how we've started and get your head down. But we've played a tough schedule and have a lot of young lads. I knew this was going to take a little of bit of time...but hopefully today can be a catalyst for moving forward."

Drury is back at home on Friday, Sept. 29 when they host Upper Iowa at 7:30 p.m. at Harrison Stadium / Curry Sports Complex.
