ST. LOUIS, Mo.– It may be early in the Great Lakes Valley Conference season, but the Drury Panthers may have captured three critical points in the league race as they defeated Maryville 1-0 on the road Friday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri.
It marked the sixth-straight win for Drury sending their record to 6-1 and 3-0 in the GLVC. Maryville dropped to 4-2-1 and 2-1 in the league.
Only three of the conference's 14 teams entered the weekend with perfect 2-0 league starts, with Drury and Maryville being two of those three. Missouri-St. Louis, who was idle on Friday, was the GLVC's only other 2-0 squad.
After a scoreless first half, Maryville nearly seized the lead in the early moments of the second half when a shot by Elsa Nilson-Hurtig hit the crossbar in the 58
th minute and Drury recovered to clear the ball out of danger.
90 seconds later, the Panthers scored the game's only goal. A corner kick set up a goal from
Andrea Camargo, her team-leading third of the season.
Tara Simon and Elean Perez were both given assists.
Drury held on from there as goalkeeper
Kaitlin Knetzke, the reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Week, stopped a shot in the 83
rd minute to keep Maryville off the board. Knetzke picked up her fifth-straight shutout and extended her scoreless streak to 521 minutes.
The Panthers owned a 10-5 advantage in shots and had six on goal while the Saints had one.
DU's win on Maryville's field avenges a loss to the Saints in last year's GLVC quarterfinals at the same venue. It was the Panthers first win at Maryville since 2017.
Drury plays again on Sunday when they travel to Rolla for a game at noon against Missouri S&T.
