SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Illinois Springfield emerged with a 4-3 win over Drury in a wild contest that featured five goals in the second at Harrison Stadium in Springfield on Sunday.
Drury fell to 3-3-4 and 1-3-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Prairie Stars went to 4-3-2 and 4-1-2 in the GLVC.
The Panthers struck for two goals in the first half. JJ Adikwu put Drury on the board in the 29
th minute with his first goal of the year, and the Panthers took a 2-0 lead just before halftime.
Carson Morgan put in his fifth goal of the season with less than a minute remaining before halftime.
Illinois Springfield quickly evened the game after the intermission and took a 3-2 lead in the 58
th minute. The Prairie Stars got a goal from Josh Conrad five minutes into the second half, then Noah Brill tied the game four minutes later. Joey Fitzgerald, who assisted on the two earlier goals, found the net in the 58
th minute to put Illinois Springfield in front.
The Panthers weren't done and answered less than a minute later to tie the game.
Abdullah Iqbal played a bounce and got around the UIS goalkeeper to chip in his second goal of the season.
The Prairie Stars went back in front, this time for good, on a goal from Corne Boshoff in the 71
st minute.
Drury threatened late with four shots in the final 19 minutes, including one from Adikwu that just missed the right post with 3:30 remaining.
Iqbal had a goal and an assist for the Panthers, while Fitzgerald had a hand in all four goals for Illinois Springfield, finishing with one goal, three assists, and five points.
The game featured 11 cards issued, including six yellow cards and a red card to Illinois Springfield, and three cautions and a red card to Drury. The game ended with 10 players aside on the field.
The Panthers return to action on Friday, Oct. 11, when they travel to Upper Iowa for a 7:30 pm in Fayette, Iowa.
