Drury squares off with McKendree in a rematch of last year's GLVC Semifinals
Drury and McKendree faceoff in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Semifinals for a rematch of last season's conference semifinals that saw McKendree win in overtime, 2-1.
The Panthers and Bearcats square off for the second time this season. The first matchup was played in rainy conditions on the campus of McKendree on September 27, with a Drury win 2-0. At the time, McKendree was ranked 13th in the nation and riding a seven-game winning streak. Drury had won two straight after their midweek tie against Emporia State. Holland Hawkins had a legacy game for the Panthers, scoring both of the goals within five minutes of each other. Bella Hernandez assisted both Hawkins' goals. Katy Fitzler recorded four saves.
Drury is coming off an overtime win against Indianapolis in the opening round of the GLVC tournament. Audrey Camargo's header in the 91st minute from Elena Perez's corner kick gave the Panthers the win. In net, Fitzler recorded her 13th shutout of the season. At the time of kickoff, it will have been 46 days since the last time Drury had lost a game. The Panthers are on a three-game winning streak where they are outscoring opponents 8-0.
McKendree sits on a six-game winning streak. The Bearcats' last loss came on October 13 against Missouri – St. Louis. In the league quarterfinals, McKendree defeated Illinois Springfield 3-1. Katie Spotanski scored twice. The other goal was scored by Aubrey Andrews in the 36th minute. McKendree's goalkeeper, Maicy Mueller faced four shots, saving three. On the Bearcats winning streak they have outscored opponents 15-3.
The winner of this game plays either Missouri – St. Louis or Maryville for the conference championship and automatic bid into the NCAA-II Tournament on Saturday at noon.
