BOLIVAR, Mo.— Drury went on a 15-0 run in the second half to pull away from Southwest Baptist to earn a 79-66 win on Saturday in Bolivar, Missouri.
The Panthers lifted their record to 12-8 and 5-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Bearcats fell to 6-14 and 2-10 in the GLVC.
Drury trailed 52-51 with 10:40 remaining but then charged past Southwest Baptist with 15 unanswered points during a near-five minute span.
PJ Ngambi's shot in the lane put the Panthers ahead 53-52 with 10:26 left and the Panthers never trailed again. A steal and dunk by
Logan Applegate with 6:33 remaining put Drury ahead by 13, then
Elijah Whitley's three-pointer moments later capped the run and put Southwest Baptist behind by 16, 68-52.
"Similar to the Illinois Springfield game last week, we battled defensively, rebounded the ball and we just needed to find a stretch to get our offense going," said Drury head coach
Chris Foster. "We were able to do that as we got the ball to the post, then Applegate hit a couple of three's, Elijah hit a big three in that stretch, and we were able to get some separation."
Ngambi came off Drury's bench to score a career-high 22 points. Applegate had 12 points, with all of them coming in the second half, and
Adam Moore added 11 points.
Ryce Piper contributed eight points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
The Panthers shot 49 percent in the game, hitting 26 of 53 shots. Drury went 63 percent from the field in the second half, making 15 of 24 shots and they knocked down 5 of 9 tries from three-point range.
The Bearcats shot 43 percent, going 26 for 61 and went just 5 for 20 from behind the arc.
David Hector led Southwest Baptist with 16 points.
Drury returns to the court on Thursday when they face Rockhurst in Kansas City for a 7:30 pm tipoff.
