Drury women's team in first, men's squad in third at GLVC Swimming & Diving Championships

EVANSVILLE, Ind.— The Drury women's swimming & diving team is in the lead and the men's squad is in third at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships at the Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville, Indiana on Thursday.
 
The Drury women's team has 962 points and leads Indianapolis by 98 points. McKendree is in third with 564 points.
 
The DU men's team is in third place and is 74 points out of first. Indianapolis leads with 785 points, McKendree is second with 735 with Panthers behind both with 711.
 
Women's Highlights
  • Drury started the day well going 1-4-5 in the 100-yard butterfly. Mellie Wijk won the event with a time of 53.84. Anastasiia Yermishyna and Mariana Alencar were the other placers.
  • The Panthers then dominated the 400-yard IM with Claire Conover championing over the field. Her time of 4:16.74 was almost a second faster than second place. Maria Munoz finished third as Luisa Machado, Gwen Bergum, and Aurora Duncan also scored for Drury, finishing fourth, fifth, and seventh respectively.
  • Josie Bushell and Ellie Walker went 1-2 in the 200-yard free with times of 1:49.49 and 1:50.01. Ashlyn Moore also scored for Drury.
  • The 400-yard medley relay team of Lexie Waller, Conover, Wijk, and Moore won the event by more than two seconds over second place.
 
Men's Highlights
  • Alejandro Villarejo finished third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.13.
  • Joao Nogueira finished fifth in the 400-yard IM with a time of 3:53.65.
  • In the 200-yard freestyle, Yuri Cabral claimed the runner-up title as his time of 1:36.82 was only good enough for second place.
  • The 400-yard medley relay team of Ivan Adamchuk, Davi Mourao, Villarejo, and Cabral finished second with a time of 3:09.42.
 
The GLVC Swimming & Diving Championships continue Friday morning at 10 am with the preliminary heats of the 500-yard freestyle. The conference championship meet concludes on Saturday.
