Panthers Poised for Strong Finishes Entering Final Day of GLVC Swimming and Diving Championships

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A highly competitive fourth day of competition at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships saw both Drury squads solidify their positions near the top of the team standings heading into Championship Saturday at Deaconess Aquatic Center.

The Drury women maintained their hold on the top spot in the team standings behind strong efforts in the 200 fly and 100 breast, while the Panthers closed the gap between first-place Indianapolis and the DU men, who sit in second place entering the final day of the competition.
 
The Panthers picked up individual wins in the women's 200 fly and men's 100 back, as well as a gold in the men's 200 free relay. Maria Fe Munoz captured the 200 fly with a time of 2:00.52, with Rianne Rose (2:02.20) placing second for the Panthers. Alvaro Zornoza was victorious in the 100 back, as Drury swept the three podium positions, with Ivan Adamchuk (47.07) placing second and Marwane Sebbata (48.14) taking the bronze.

The Panthers' 200 free relay team of Yuri Cabral, Lucas Mineur, Sebbata and Matteo Vissotto turned in a winning effort of 1:18.35. Vissotto also led the Panthers in the 500 free, taking fourth in the race with a swim of 4:24.04.

In addition to Rose's second-place finish in the 200 fly, Gwen Bergum (1;00.67) took silver in the 100 breast, and Belen Morales (4:59.14) placed third in the 500 free for the DU women. 

Maddie Rogers led the Panthers' efforts in the 1-meter diving competition, placing third with a score of 434.30, while three additional DU divers placed in the top six. Anamarie Lewis (417.40) finished fourth, while Piera Rufino (411.35) placed fifth and Sophia Sechler (402.50) came in sixth.

The Drury men enjoyed a strong overall showing in the 500 free, placing three swimmers in the top eight. In addition to Vissotto's fourth-place finish, Josue Hernandez-Tellez (4:26.83) placed seventh and Colby Hughes (4:28.28) finished eighth.

Joao Nogueira led the Panthers in the 100 breast with his third-place finish in 53.56, while Elliot Weber (53.62) finished fourth. DU also claimed two of the top eight finishes in the 200 fly, paced by Belhassen Ben Miled's (1:46.33) bronze-worthy effort, followed by Hughes' (1:49.97) eighth-place effort.

On the women's side, Drury (1451) stayed in front of Indianapolis (1416) for the top spot, while UMSL remained in third with 719 points and Lewis (622.5) and McKendree (584.5) completed the top five. Rockhurst followed in sixth with 500 points, while William Jewell (489), Quincy (376), Truman State (360), and Southwest Baptist (199) rounded out the standings.

Despite the Panthers narrowing their deficit to just 98 points with Friday's effort, Indianapolis enters Saturday with 1304.5 points, followed by the Panthers at 1206.5. McKendree stood pat in third with 1062.5 points, followed by Missouri S&T (609) and Quincy (505) in fourth and fifth. Lewis (450.5), UMSL (405), Rockhurst (403) and William Jewell (343) sit sixth through ninth with Truman State and Southwest Baptist taking 10th and 11th, respectively.

Saturday at the GLVC Championships
The fifth and final day of the GLVC Championships begins Saturday morning with preliminaries of the 100 free, 200 back and 200 breast at 10 a.m. (Central). The men's 3-meter diving competition is set to begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by the men's and women's 1650 free at 2:20. Finals are scheduled to get underway at 5:30 p.m.
