GENEVA, Ohio—
Davi Mourao defended in his national championship in the 100 Breaststroke, and the DU men's team pulled within 13 points of the lead at the NCAA-II Swimming & Diving Championships at the SPIRE Institute Aquatic Center in Geneva, Ohio on Friday.
The Drury men's squad has 336 points and is in second place after the third full day of competition. Tampa, with 349 points, is in first. Defending national champion Indianapolis is in the hunt and in third with 302 points.
The Drury women's team slipped to third as the Panthers have 287.5 points. Drury suffered a setback when they appeared to have won the 200 Free Relay but were disqualified with an early take-off. Nova Southeastern is in first with 381 points and Colorado Mesa is in third with 332.5 points.
Men's Highlights
- Davi Mourao won the national title in the 100 Breaststroke for the second straight year as the junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, posted a time of 51.88 and won by 0.53 seconds
- Cole Earl, a fifth-year senior from Springfield-Glendale, capped his career with a silver medal in the 3-meter competition. Earl had a total of 580.75 points, and finished behind only Julio Osuno Kelly from Indianapolis, who set a meet record with 645.15 points
- Alejandro Villarejo posted a third-place finish in the 200 Fly (1:44.58)
- Ivan Adamchuk finished fifth in the 100 Back (46.35), and Viktor Khnykin came in seventh (47.11)
- Joao Nogueira was sixth in the 500 Free with a time of 4:21.41, while Matteo Vissotto won the consolation race and was ninth overall (4:23.68)
Women's Highlights
- Mellie Wijk was the national runner-up in the 200 Fly as the Panthers finished second, third, and fifth in the event. Wijk was second with a time of 1:57.35 as Rafaela Raurich from Nova Southeastern won by more than a second (1:56.17). Aurora Duncan was third for the Panthers with a time of 1:58.10 and Maria Munoz was fifth (1:59.16)
- Claire Conover turned in a sixth-place finish in the 100 Breaststroke as she posted a time of 1:02.07
The final day of competition of the NCAA-II National Championships is Saturday and starts with the preliminary heats of the 100 Free at 9 am (CT) in Geneva, Ohio.
