Panthers fall at Maryville to take first loss this season

ST. LOUIS, Mo.– Drury suffered their first loss of the season as Maryville held off the Panthers for a 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Saints, the only unbeaten team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, took over sole possession of first place in the league as they improved to 6-0-1 and 5-0 in the GLVC. Drury fell to 6-1-2 and 4-1 in the conference.

Maryville scored first as Elsa Nilson-Hurtig put in her seventh goal of the year in the 20th minute.

The Panthers answered eight minutes later, though. Kourtney Tucker's corner kick set up a header by Andrea Camargo, who put the ball in front of the net for Holland Hawkins. Hawkins tied the game with her eighth goal of the season and her sixth goal in the last four games. Camargo and Tucker both had an assist.

The Saints got the lead back just before halftime. Ashlyn Hunt scored for the sixth time this year, giving Maryville a 2-1 lead in the 44th minute.

Neither team scored in the second half as Drury put up seven shots with four on goal in the second 45 minutes. The Saints had six shots with three on the net after halftime. The Panthers owned a 14-11 advantage in shots for the game and both teams had five shots on goal.

Sunday's game was the second meeting of the season between the two teams. Drury and Maryville battled to a 2-2 tie in a non-conference match on Sept. 13 in Springfield. The game marks the only tie for the Saints so far this year.

Drury is back at home next weekend and will host Indianapolis on Friday at 5 pm in Harrison Stadium.
