GLVC CHAMPS 2X - Drury wins men's and women's swimming & diving conference titles

ELKHART, Ind.— The Drury men's team and women's swimming & diving teams won the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship on Saturday at the Elkhart Health & Aquatic Center in Elkhart, Indiana.
 
The women's team trailed Indianapolis with only three events remaining but rallied to take the lead after the 200 Backstroke with Drury swimmers finishing second, third, and fourth. The Panthers went in front of the Greyhounds after that event, 1,765-1761, then widened their lead with a one-two-three finish in the 200 Breaststroke, led by Jonette Laegreid's conference title and pool record in the event. Drury's lead held as the Panthers and Indianapolis swam to a tie in the 400 Free Relay in the final event of the championship.
 
The Drury women's squad finished with 1,996 points, while Indianapolis was second with 1,921 points. McKendree finished third with 1,180.5.
 
The Drury women's title marks the ninth championship in 12 years for the Drury women's program and their second straight GLVC crown.
 
The Drury men's team won their seventh GLVC Championship and their second league title in three years. The Panthers finished with 1,770 points to win the league championship, while McKendree was second with 1,734.5 points and Indianapolis was third with 1,407.
 
Women's Highlights
  • Aisling Allen was seventh in the 1650 Free, finishing with a time of 17:25.34
  • Freshman Belen Morales was third in the 100 Free (50.05), and the Panthers also picked up sixth place from Kirsten Lee (50.85), seventh from Ashlyn Moore (50.88), and eighth from Ellie Walker (51.01)
  • Drury had 2-3-4 finishes in the 200 Back has Lexie Waller was the conference runner-up with a time of 1:57.99, Maria Fe Munoz was third (1:59.16), and Nikol Maniko was fourth (1:59.85)
  • Jonette Laegreid set a facility record and Drury finished 1-2-3 in the 200 Breast. Laegreid broke a pool record and won the GLVC title with a time of 2:09.28. Mellie Wijk was second (2:11.08), and Claire Conover was third (2:11.41). Gwen Bergum finished fifth (2:17.44)
  • The women's competition ended with a tie in 400 Free Relay. Both Indianapolis and the Panthers, with Kirsten Lee, Nikol Maniko, Ellie Walker and Mellie Wijk, finished with a time of 3:21.81
     
Men's Highlights
  • Israel Zavaleta took gold in the 1-meter diving competition, giving him a sweep in both diving events. The graduate student from Mexico City took the 1-meter event with 641.65 points, while Drury's Carter Austin was third with 589.90 points
  • Drury got a third place finish in the 1650 Free from Matheus Siniscalchi, who posted a time of 15:32.74. Colby Hughes was fifth (15:40.78), and Josue Hernandez was eighth (15:46.68)
  • Yuri Cabral won the GLVC championship in the 100 Free with a time from 43.51. Marwane Sebatta was fifth (43.87), and Matteo Vissotto was sixth (43.96)
  • Alvaro Zornoza was second in the 200 Back and was just 0.10 seconds off the winning time, finishing with a time of 1:43.14. Ivan Adamchuk finished fourth (1:44.65)
  • Davi Mourao was third in the 200 Breast with a time of 1:57.07, while Joao Nogueira was fourth (1:59.60), and Alejandro Villarejo was sixth (2:00.02)
  • The Panthers ended the meet with a second place finish in the 400 Free Relay. Yuri Cabral, Alvaro Zornoza, Alejandro Villarejo, and Matteo Vissotto combined for a time of 2:53.47 and while they narrowly fell to McKendree's conference-record time of 2:52.88, Drury's second place finish was enough to hold off the Bearcats and win the conference title as a team
 
Both Drury swim teams will compete again when they host the Last Chance Meet, a final opportunity to set NCAA-II qualifying times, on Feb. 22 at the Breech Pool on the DU campus.
