LIBERTY - A blistering second half 3-point shooting effort by William Jewell fueled a late 18-0 run and the host Cardinals upset No. 14 Drury 80-64 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Center.
The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for Drury, which fell to 12-3 overall and lost for the first time in GLVC play (6-1). William Jewell improved to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in the league with its fourth straight victory.
And just as an 18-0 brought the Lady Panthers back for a victory at Rockhurst on Thursday, this time, it did them in.
After trailing by 12 at halftime (43-31), Drury fought back to cut the deficit to just three (59-56) on an
Alice Heinzler layup with 6:05 remaining. But Jewell would make four 3-pointers over the next four minutes, Drury couldn't answer, and the Lady Panthers found themselves trailing 77-56 and headed for their first loss since November 28, when they fell to Pittsburg State in the Doubletree Hotel/Houlihan's Thanksgiving Classic at The O'.
Jewell made 12 of 29 3-point tries for the game, including 8 of 14 in the second half.
The Lady Panthers, meanwhile, were 2 of 16 from 3-point range (13 percent) and shot 44 percent overall (25 of 57). One of the nation's leaders in fewest turnovers per game coming in (10.9), Drury turned it over 15 times to just 13 by the Cardinals.
"That's a good William Jewell team that's hard to play at home ... a lot of credit goes to them for hitting open shots," Drury coach
Molly Miller said. "We had some defensive slip-ups, and they capitalized on our slip-ups.
"We were playing the pace that William Jewell wanted us to play ... we were taking quick shots in the first half, and just played right into their hands. We made a run, and then couldn't catch a break ... when they shot a three late, it was going in."
Paige Wilson matched a career-high with 16 points - including 10 straight points to keep Drury in it early in the second half - to lead three Lady Panthers in double-figures. Wilson went 2-for-5 from 3-point range; the rest of the Lady Panthers were 0-for-11.
Annie Armstrong and
Sanayika Shields had 11 points each, with Shields and
Shelby White grabbing eight boards each to lead Drury to a 34-31 advantage on the boards.
Logan Antenen had 15 points to pace four William Jewell to reach double-figures, with Aerial Smith adding 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, Christia Benton-Keys adding 12 points and Katie Finn coming off the bench for 10 points.Â
"I hope this sent a message ... we didn't have our best practice on Friday," Miller said. "The sting of a loss can sometimes send you a message at this point of the year. We have to learn from it and regroup."
Drury returns to GLVC action on the road next weekend, visiting Maryville on Thursday and UMSL on Saturday in St. Louis.
