Guelly Scores Twice, Panthers End Frustration Vs Quincy With 3-2 Victory

Charles Guelly scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 78th minute, to lift Drury to a 3-2 victory over rival Quincy in Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer play Friday night from Harrison Stadium in the Curry Sports Complex.

It marked Drury's first win since 2009 over the Hawks, who beat the Panthers 2-1 in the NCAA-II Round of 16 last year in Quincy to end DU's season. The Panthers came into the contest 0-7-1 against the Hawks in their last eight meetings, with all seven losses by one goal.

On this night, Drury (5-4-2, 5-2-2 in the GLVC) struck first on a Guelly goal in the 28th minute from 12 yards out, afterward which the sophomore raced to the stands and hugged his mother, Jacqueline, who had come to the US from Paris, France to watch him play as a Panther for the first time.

DU's 1-0 lead stood through the half, but Quincy tied it up in the 49th minute on an unassisted goal by Jordan Stephens, his fourth of the year.

The Panthers went back ahead 2-1 when Ben Bruce scored his team-leading fifth goal at 64:49 off an Antoine Vial assist, but the Hawks (7-3-1, 6-2-1) countered in the 73rd minute when Taylor Reis found the back of the net to tie the match at 2.

But Guelly scored his second goal of the game - and the season - at 78:26 from 10 yards away (Bruce assist) for the game-winner, putting a temporary end to a frustrating run of losses to the Hawks, an NCAA-II national semifinalist last season.

Drury outshot the Hawks 9-7 for the game, including 7-4 on goal, as the young Panthers improved to 4-0-2 in their last six matches after a 1-4-0 start to the season.

Nicholas Helin had two saves in goal in picking up the win for the Panthers, who return to action at 2:30 p.m. Sunday when they host Truman State in a GLVC matchup.
