CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - Defending champion Drury grabbed narrow leads on both the men's and women's sides after Wednesday's opening day of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Swim and Dive Championships at the Crawfordsville Aquatics Center.
The Drury women, with victories in all three races contested on Wednesday, have 152 points, with Truman State in second (134) and William Jewell (127) in third. Lewis is fourth at 104, with Indianapolis fifth with 90 points.
Sarah Pullen successfully defended her title in the 1000 Free, with
Allie Reynolds finishing third. Drury then captured both the 200 Medley Relay (
Katya Rudenko,
Corinne Rinne, Vera Johannson, Janice Poon) in 1:43.46 and the 800 Free Relay (
Wen Xu,
Leah Reed,
Gretchen Stein and Pullen) in 7:29.32 to close out the night. The Panthers also picked up big points by winning the B Final in each of the two relay events on the abbreviated Wednesday schedule.
Drury did the same in the men's portion of Wednesday's opening day to amass 126 points, good for a one-point lead over Missouri S&T (125). William Jewell (112) is third, with Truman State (105) and Lewis (103) completing the top five after three events.
The Panthers, after a sub-par effort in the morning's 1000 Free, bounced back with a 200 Medley Relay victory with
Jordi Montseny,
Kacper Pelczynski,
Stanislav Kuzmin and
Samuel Olson in 1:29.05, edging out Lewis (1:29.16) with a strong kick from Olson. Drury closed the night with a second-place finish, for a second straight year, to Missouri S&T in the 800 Free Relay, with the Miners finishing in 6:33.05 to Drury's 6:38.06 with Montseny,
Sean Feher,
Daniel Rzadkowski and
David Wong.
Action continues Thursday with prelims beginning at 10:30 a.m. (EST), with women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter diving slated for 1:30 p.m.
