No. 11 Lady Panthers Roll Over William Jewell 88-62 Behind Perfect Effort From Shields

Sanayika Shields equalled her career high with 24 points - on 11 for 11 shooting - and No. 11 Drury avenged its only loss in its last 19 games by thrashing William Jewell 88-62 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday night at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.

Addy Roller added 11 points for the Lady Panthers, who improved to 21-3 overall and 15-1 in the GLVC on their annual "Pink Zone/Play4Kay" Breast Cancer Awareness Night. It marked the 18th win in their last 19 games for Drury, which avenged its only loss - an 80-64 setback at Jewell on January 17 - in a big way.

The Lady Panthers raced to 30-15 lead over the first 10 minutes and led 49-28 at the half, largely on 18-for-30 shooting (60 percent) keyed by an 8-for-8 effort from Shields.

"Our girls were probably ready for this one when the final buzzer sounded up at (Jewell's) place," first-year Drury coach Molly Miller said. "It was a total team effort tonight. And you can't say enough about Sanayika Shields, going 11-for-11. I thought our girls did a good job of recognizing Shields was the hot player tonight, and we did a good job of getting the ball to her.

"It's probably settling in for her that this is the homestretch of her career. I'm so proud of that kid for the way she comes and grinds every day."

Twelve different Lady Panthers scored, including six points and six assists in 17 minutes from freshman guard Heather Harman as no Lady Panther played more than 23 minutes.

Drury finished at 52 percent shooting for the game (34 of 65), while limiting Jewell (13-11, 8-8) to just 44 percent, including 6 for 18 from 3-point range.

Shields, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week after her back-to-back, double-doubles last week in wins at top-ranked Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside (where she hit the game-winning 18-footer just before the final horn), set a new DU record for best FG percentage in a game (minimum 10 attempts) with her 11-for-11 showing. She was also 2-for-2 at the free-throw line on a perfect night for the senior post, who's averaged 20.3 points and 8.7 rebounds over her past three games.

Drury went 10-for-25 on 3-point tries, with Roller making all three of her attempts and Alice Heinzler adding a pair. The Lady Panthers committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 21 by the Cardinals, who got 10 points each from Logan Antenen and Maddie Nelson.

The Lady Panthers are back in action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff against Rockhurst on Homecoming and the fourth annual Overflow The O' day. Drury will also retire the jerseys of former Panther greats Alex Hall and Brandon Lockhart immediately following the women's game.
