Mike Nwelue scored 17 points and
Ben Fisher added a career-high 15 points as Drury defeated Rockhurst 75-60 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup before an Overflow The O' crowd of 2,822 Saturday at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
Drury (17-8, 11-6 in the GLVC) snapped a three-game losing streak and also received great news with word that UMSL won 76-71 at Truman State on Saturday, giving the Panthers sole possession of the GLVC West lead with one regular season game remaining. Drury will play that next Thursday at The O' against Missouri S&T, while Truman will travel to Quincy.Â
Should Drury defeat S&T, the Panthers would win the West and clinch the No. 2 seed in the GLVC Championship post-season tournament and a first-round bye, and thereby avoid the play-in opening round on Sunday March 1. Truman, which holds the tie-breaker over the Panthers, would need a win at Quincy and a DU loss.
With
Cameron Adams (back) missing his second straight game and
Kameron Bundy (3-for-15) struggling with his shooting for the third time in his last four games, the Panthers turned to Nwelue and Fisher for more offense.
Nwelue made 8 of 13 shots and added five rebounds in a 17-point day that was his best outing since suffering a leg injury at Rockhurst on January 15. Fisher answered with the biggest offensive day of his four-year career, making 4 of 6 shots (all 3-pointers) and all three of his free throws on a day when two of his mentors way back when, Alex Hall and Brandon Lockhart from the 2012-13 NCAA-II national championship squad, had their Nos. 33 and 21 jerseys retired.
An appreciative Overflow and Homecoming crowd gave Hall and Lockhart numerous standing ovations, and then found themselves applauding the shooting and all-out hustle from Fisher - whose 14 points and four rebounds came in just 17 minutes - and Nwelue.
"I want to thank our administration, along with (Overflow coordinators) Michele (Boswell), Carol (Oliver) and Brad (Oliver) for their efforts with Overflow, and I want to thank the fans who came out today and honored two special young men in Alex Hall and Brandon Lockhart," Drury coach
Steve Hesser said. "And then Ben giving us 15 points? I'm assuming that's his career high. It was good to see, as was Mike being efficient.Â
"We kept possessions alive today. We didn't shoot it very well, but we kept possessions alive with some effort plays, and we didn't turn it over much, so that gave us extra possessions."
After being outrebounded 37-22 in Thursday's loss to William Jewell, the Panthers beat the Hawks 44-36 on the board, led by seven from
John Caraballo, six from
Deon Pettigrew and five rebounds each from Bundy and Nwelue.
Adam Fatkin had 18 points and Russell Burns added 15 points for the Hawks, who were making their final trip to The O' under the direction of head coach Bill O'Connor who announced his retirement at the end of this season after 21 years at the helm of Drury's oldest rival. The near-sellout crowd gave O'Connor a warm ovation as Drury recognized him in pre-jersey retirement ceremonies for the class with which he and his Hawks have displayed throughout the rivalry.
Drury had just eight turnovers in the contest while forcing 19 by Rockhurst, which fell to 7-18 and 3-14 in the GLVC.
The Panthers shot 39 percent for the game (27 of 70), while the Hawks made 22 of 55 from the field (40 percent).
Replays of Saturday's DU-Rockhurst women's/men's doubleheader air at noon Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday on Mediacom Connections 22 throughout the Ozarks.
Drury will close the regular season by hosting S&T on Thursday in an 8 p.m. tipoff for Senior Night, when seniors Fisher, Adams, Nwelue and
Drake Patterson will be honored in pregame festivities.
