RENSSELAER, Ind. - A
Conner Wilson two-run single in the sixth gave Drury the lead for good and the Panthers a 4-3 victory over Saint Joseph's for a sweep of their Saturday Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.
Drury defeated the Pumas 5-3 in the opener as the Panthers improved to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the GLVC with their fourth consecutive victory. Saint Joseph's fell to 5-10 and 1-5.
Wilson's two-run single in the sixth inning of the seven-inning nightcap made a winner of senior right-hander
Austin Faulconer (2-2), who allowed seven hits and three runs (one earned) in six innings of work. He struck out five and walked two before giving way to senior closer
Gage Jacobs, who picked up his fifth save of the season and his second of the day with a 1-2-3 seventh.
Drury trailed 3-1 after three after the Pumas plated three runs in the bottom of the third. The Panthers cut it to a one-run deficit in the fourth when
Luke Tewes doubled and came around to score on
Tyler Arthur's sacrifice fly. In the decisive sixth, Tewes and
Bobby Lang opened the inning with singles to set the stage for Wilson's go-ahead hit.
Drury out-hit the Pumas 8-7 in the nightcap, with Tewes and Lang leading the way with two hits apiece.
The Panthers picked up 13 hits in the nine-inning opener, as senior outfiedler
Dallas Williams stayed hot with a three hit, three-RBI effort.
Drury struck for a 3-0 lead in the second, keyed by Williams' three-run homer. The advantage grew to 5-0 with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings before the Pumas made a run with three in the bottom of the seventh. But freshman
Matthew Tipton and Jacobs gave the Panthers a clean eighth and ninth to secure the victory.
Trevor Richards (2-2) allowed just three hits in six innings, striking out nine Pumas and walking two for the victory.
Mike Rafter,
Spencer Wilmes, Wilson and Arthur had two hits each to support the three-hit effort from Williams, who was a combined 9-for-12 at the plate over his last three games before going 1-for-4 in Saturday's finale.
The Panthers and Pumas will close the four-game series with a pair starting at noon on Sunday in Rensselaer.
