Luke Tewes' two-out, walk-off single to left scored
Dallas Williams with the winning run, capping a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth that gave Drury a 6-5 victory over Truman State and a split of their four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series Sunday afternoon at Meador Park.
The victory pushed the Panthers to 16-16-1 overall and 11-10-1 in the GLVC, while Truman fell to 22-12 and 13-9.
Drury trailed 4-3 through through seven, but watched the Bulldogs put up an insurance run in the eighth for the 5-3 advantage against a Panthers' attack that hadn't managed many rallies all day off TSU starter Alex Hoffmann (4-1) - until the ninth.
Christian Magno led off with a double, and
Spencer Wilmes' single scored pinch-runner
Ryan Wadkins to cut it to 5-4.
Mike Rafter reached on an error on TSU first baseman Paul Trenhaile, and DU was in business again with no outs and runners at first and second. After a sacrifice bunt from
Ryan Colombo moved the runners up a base, the Bulldogs put Williams on intentionally to load the bases with one out.Â
Bobby Lang's fielder's choice grounder to the hole in short was deep enough to score Wilmes and tie the game, setting the stage for Tewes to smack the game-winner through the shortstop hole into left, and then brace himself for the onslaught of teammates headed his way to celebrate the walkoff win in a series where the four games were decided by a total of eight runs, including three games by two runs or less.
"Our pitchers and defense kept us in it long enough for our bats to come around," Drury coach
Scott Nasby said, after career coaching victory No. 99 (99-46-1). "It was great to have Tewes get us the winner as he's been the guy we've relied upon all year. The at-bat
Christian Magno had was one of the biggest of the season. He struggled tremendously at the beginning of the year, but of late, has been one of our best guys.
"The emotional high of a walk-off win can do tremendous things."
(To See A Replay Of The Game, Click This Link)Tewes had three hits to lead the Panthers; after starting the series with an 0-for-5 night Friday, he went 6-for-11 with three RBIs over the final three games.
Lang, Magno and
Conner Wilson had two hits each as the Panthers had 11 hits to 14 by the Bulldogs.
Nick Costantino (3-1) picked up the victory in relief for DU with 1 2/3 innings of hitless work.Â
Wyatt Fones had three hits and Trenhaile drove in three for the Bulldogs.
Drury returns to action on Tuesday, playing host to Missouri S&T in a GLVC doubleheader (7/9) starting at 3 p.m. at Meador.
