QUINCY, Ill. - The Drury bats managed just 10 hits over 16 combined innings and dropped a doubleheader to Quincy by 6-3 and 3-1 scores to open their Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball series here Saturday at QU Stadium.
The Panthers fell to 17-19-1 overall and 12-12-1 in the GLVC, while Quincy moved to 24-13 and 18-8 in the matchup of the teams picked 1-2 in the GLVC West preseason poll of league coaches.
On Saturday, the Hawks defeated the senior mound duo of
Trevor Richards and
Austin Faulconer, who didn't have the offensive support throughout either contest as Drury managed just four hits off Quincy's Graham Spraker (3-1) in the 3-1, seven-inning nightcap loss after coming up with six hits in the 6-3 loss in the opener.
In that nine-inning contest, senior outfielder
Dallas Williams was the DU offense, smacking solo homers (his seventh and eighth on the season) to lead off the game and in his next at-bat in the third, when the Panthers trailed 5-1 after Quincy struck for three in the first and two in the second.
Drury's other run came courtesy of a
Luke Tewes RBI single in the fifth, which pulled DU to within 5-3 before the Hawks added another run in the sixth to push the advantage back to three.
Richards fell to 2-3 on the season, allowing 11 hits and six runs (all earned) but struck out eight in going seven innings.
Mark Niebruegge (6-1) allowed six hits and three runs in eight innings for the victory.
In Game Two, Drury took a 1-0 lead in the second on a
John Goodrich RBI single to score
Tyler Arthur, but Quincy tied it in the bottom of the frame off Faulconer (3-5), then added single runs in the fourth and fifth en route to the victory.
Faulconer surrendered six hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking four.
