KANSAS CITY - Drury let leads evaporate in both halves of a doubleheader and fell twice to Rockhurst, by 3-2 and 7-3 scores, in their Great Lakes Valley Conference twinbill here on Saturday.
The Hawks (21-18, 12-6) scored twice in the bottom of the ninth for a walk-off win in the opener, and then rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the third with a five-run explosion an inning later to go on to the victory in the seven-inning nightcap and drop the Panthers to 13-26 overall and 5-13 In the GLVC with their seventh consecutive loss.
The Hawks and Panthers will conclude the series with a noon 7/9 doubleheader tomorrow in KC.
In the nine-inning opener, Drury led 2-1 entering the bottom of the ninh, courtesy of eight strong innings from starter
Ryan Colombo (10 hits, 1 run, 5 strikeouts, no walks), but the Panthers' bullpen let it get away, with two hit-by-pitches and a walk playing a part in the Hawks' rally for the win on Brett Marr's two-run, walk-off single with one out.
John Goodrich had two hits while
Nathan Schweppe and
Conner Wilson had RBIs to lead the Panthers.
In the nightcap, Drury struck for a 3-0 lead in the third on a
Ryan Wadkins RBI sacrifice bunt, a run-scoring double from Colombo and
Mason McCarville's RBI single to take charge.
But the Hawks countered with five runs off DU starter
Luke Burnidge in the bottom of the fourth to grab a 5-3 lead and never looked back from there.
Colombo and McCarville had two hits apiece for the Panthers, who were out-hit 12-7.
