Rogers State holds off Drury in both games of DH

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- Rogers State swept Drury in a doubleheader winning game one 14-5 and taking game two 4-2 on Sunday at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark.

Drury threatened in the late innings of game one, but Rogers State pulled away in the last two innings. The Panthers trailed 6-1 after five frames but pulled within two runs of the lead in the seventh. Drury scored twice in the inning as K.K. Daniel drew a bases-loaded walk and Drew Newson produced another run with a sacrifice fly.

The Hillcats blew the game open with three runs in the eighth and five more in the ninth inning.

Austin Simms (0-2) took the loss and allowed only one earned run as Drury committed four errors. Spencer Bivens (2-1) got the win for Rogers State.

In game two, Drury made another late threat but fell short. The Panthers scored a run in the eighth to pull within two and put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth but could not push home the tying run.

Ryan Kayhill went 2 for 4 at the plate and drove in a run to lead Drury at the plate.

Both teams stranded 10 runners in the game.

"Ultimately, the second game was the first one we've been competitive in out of the five we've played, and that's not acceptable," said Drury head coach Scott Nasby. "There were some positive things to take away from the second game, and we were a couple of timely hits away from having a different outcome. But just trying to keep the game close is not the Drury Baseball way."

Rogers State improved to 6-2, and the Hillcats kept the Panthers winless dropping Drury's record to 0-5.

The three-game series concludes on Monday with a 4 p.m. game at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark.
