Panthers Earn Non-Conference Split vs. Davenport

OZARK, Mo. – The Drury Baseball Panthers earned a non-conference split vs. Davenport, winning the seven inning opener 15-5 before falling 14-3 in the nightcap on Saturday at US Baseball Park in Ozark.

In the seven-inning opener, Ryan Kayhill led off the second inning with a double, then Riley Herron smashed a two-run shot to get the Drury on the board.  RBI hits in the Drury fourth by Herron and Bayler Hinz extended the Drury lead to 4-0

Davenport scored three runs on three hits in top of the fifth to cut the Drury lead to 4-3.  Drury got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a Davenport error that allowed Brant Schaffitzel to score.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the Davenport sixth Zac Wilson hit a two-run single to even the game up 5-5.  With the bases loaded in the Drury sixth Schaffitzel doubled to left center to clear the bases and give DU an 8-5 lead.   Drury capped off the sixth by scoring 10 runs on five hits in the sixth for the 15-5 win.

Nick Costantino (2-0) got the win and threw 1/3 of an inning in relief.

Schaffitzel went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and scored twice, Herron went 2-for-2, had four RBIs and scored twice, and Kayhill went 2-for-2 and scored two runs.

In the nightcap, Davenport held a 6-0 lead after five innings before Drury chipped away with three runs on three hits in the fifth.  Austin Hoegerl came in to pinch hit and doubled to plate two Drury runners to highlight the fifth.

Davenport pounded out nine hits and scored eight runs in the seventh to put the game away for good and claim a 14-3 win.

Colby Childs (0-2) received the loss and Justin Palmbos (2-1) got the win for Davenport.   Davenport pounded out 19 hits and Drury finished with seven hits.

Drury goes to 7-11 and Davenport moves to 8-7.

The two teams play game four of a four-game series on Sunday with a single nine-inning contest that starts at 11 a.m. at U.S. Baseball Park.
