Panthers split doubleheader with Winona State

OZARK, Mo.— Drury lost their first game against Winona State 6-3 but reversed the result for a 6-3 win in game two as the Panthers split a doubleheader on Sunday at US Baseball Park in Ozark. Both teams ended the day with 4-3 records.

Winona State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, then scored three times in the third to take command of the game that was scheduled for seven innings. Drury scored a run in the bottom of the third but fell behind 6-1 after the Warriors tacked on two runs in the fourth.

Brant Schaffitzel reached base in all four of his plate appearances in game one hitting an RBI double and drawing three walks. The junior from Springfield-Hillcrest also scored a run, and Drury's Clayton Engel went 3 for 4 at the plate.

"In the first game, we gave up 14 free bases, not just with walks but throwing to third when we didn't need to, a passed ball, a balk, a stolen base…that's way too many for a seven-inning game," said Drury head coach Scott Nasby. "Then, we started an inning with a guy on second base but couldn't do enough offensively to get him in or come back."

The Panthers fell behind 2-1 early in game two but put together a four-run bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. Jackson Dierenfeldt led off the inning by reaching base on an error, was moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt, then advanced to third on a fly ball. Aaron Mann's single tied the game, then Drury strung together four consecutive singles driving in three more runs to take a 5-2 lead.

"We got five balls that weren't on the barrel go for hits, so we got our breaks," said Nasby. "It's about having guys in the right spots when you get your breaks – that's the way the game goes."

Bayler Hinz went 4 for 4 at the plate with an RBI while Jacob Mitchell went 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI's. Mitchell also had two assists in the outfield as he gunned down a runner at the plate in the seventh inning as well as a runner at third in the eighth to help counter late-inning threats from Winona State.

The Panthers head to Hawaii next week with a five-game series at Hawaii Pacific that starts with a doubleheader on Friday.
